Is feminism still relevant today?

7 comments:

  1. Feminism is still relevant in today's world as there is still inequality between men and women in society. However, wollstone's ideas need to be taken lightly as she also argued that marriage was slavery which is absurd. Therefore, whilst feminism could be argued to be relevant sometimes it needs to be taken lightly in other occasions- Chuka Umunna

  2. Some may argue that feminism is irrelevant in modern society, that it has served its purpose and the continuation of the feminist movement is actually having a negative effect on western society, the reasons that this could be argued are that women now have the right to vote and are recognized by the law as citizens with equal rights to men. Also some say women now have equal working opportunities and rights to men and society now a days protects the rights of women. On a similar note to this there have been significant steps taken to protect these rights whereas there has been no similar effort to protect the rights of men. So it could be argued that the continuation of organized feminism may lead to a situation where women are above men in the eyes of the law and society. Finally the number of separations and divorces have increased over the last 30 years, and some people say one of the causes of this the increase in levels of Feminism and women striving to conform to the feminist ideology expressed in the above article that marriage and relationships are a form of slavery.

  3. Whilst feminism is many things, it certainly is not irrelevant. Some may argue it is no longer important in today's society, however some feminists confuse equality with superiority, creating a false image of feminism. The answer to this is simple; until women are equal, feminism is most certainly still relevant.

    1. There is a little irony here - commenting as your nom de plume, Tony Abbott, who has a rather dodgy record on sexism...

    2. A sneaky bit of hypocrisy, for are not the non de plumes supposed to protect us... not give an opportunity for a cheap shot at our opinions.

    3. It's not a cheap shot, it's meant to encourage Tony Abbott to look up his/her namesakes history on gender politics. You're right, your nom de plume should protect your identity but not your political opinion

  4. Feminism is still relevant. It’s an issue that has been present for a while, and in my opinion probably won’t be solved in my lifetime. The thing that frustrates me about modern views is that most people assume that feminism is a campaign to make women superior to men when in fact it’s just campaigning for simple equality, but this belief prevents us from making much progress on the equality front. While there certainly is improvement in areas such as the Wage Gap, it’s still a present issue, and I fear that our society, one that is built on inequality, will never become fully equal, no matter how much people campaign. So yes, feminism is still relevant, as much as it always has been.
